“I grew up competing in many sports in high school and college (Football, Baseball, Hockey, Lacrosse). Along with athletics comes strength and conditioning programs, which helped grow my obsession with fitness and nutrition. I loved being part of a team and all the things that come with them- motivation, camaraderie, support, accountability, etc. Since finishing graduate school and starting my “grown up” life I found that the team atmosphere that I had all my life was gone. I still stayed in shape and worked out at traditional fitness facilities, but putting my headphones on and beating myself up every day was getting monotonous. I felt like I had plateaued, I was not getting the results I wanted.
I needed a change, and as a US military member with thoughts of training and real world evolutions on the horizon I realized I needed a team again to help me prepare. I found Crossfit Manassas (CFM) and have found just that and more, a great community that made me feel welcome and supported from day one. I have been a part of the CFM community for a year now and I have seen considerable gains in my functional strength and overall condition. I did not have a solid understanding of Olympic weightlifting or powerlifting though I had been doing them for years, and even less of functional movements with kettle-bells or plyometrics. I have found the coaches at CFM to be incredibly knowledgeable. Doing the movements with the coaches instruction on proper form and their support, along with the support of the other athletes has boosted my potential so much. I’ve found the programming to be very well rounded and always interesting, I get excited when I see what’s in store for the next workout of the day.
I have also stepped onto the mat at Vanguard Gym and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I have done some grappling in the military which initially sparked my interest. That interest has now become an obsession since joining Vanguard. Just like the Crossfit side I have found a great bunch of people at Vanguard (a lot are the same folks, training Crossfit and Martial Arts like myself). Many of my training partners have turned into great friends. The instruction is fantastic and the curriculum is very well structured. I feel like I progress every day I come to class, whether it’s learning a new technique, pushing my limits rolling (sparring), and consistently being humbled. Since training at Vanguard my confidence has increased and my ego has diminished, I know this will be a significant factor in helping me complete my challenges in the military.
Joining Vanguard / Crossfit Manassas has been the best decision I could have made to prepare myself for my challenge. Doing the training, adhering to the programing and curriculum has brought me success in my physical strength. Being a part of the community, with all of the support, coaching, and motivation have given me the mental strength I know I will need to succeed.”
